SRI has been created to act as a focal point for collaborative research which bridges science and policy in the field of resource management and sustainable development. 

The Institute will facilitate change towards sustainable development by providing knowledge to support decision making and by developing the exchange of ideas.

The Institute is a partnership between EnviroCentre, Queens University of Belfast and the Stockholm Environment Institute at York and is funded by the Environment and Heritage Service through the Community Waste Innovation Fund.
